Sustainable Travel Hero's
Here at Wild About Holidays we are all about wildlife and nature, so it's very important to us that we do everything we can to preserve places and creatures at risk. That's why sustainable travel is so high on our list. It means travelling in a way which gives thought to your carbon footprint, doing your best to put something into the local economy where you are and making sure nothing you do harms any animal or the environment they live in. It's a big ask!
So, to make it easier for you, we have some suggestions for places where they have done some of the work for you:
- New Zealand
- Kenya
- Scotland
- Costa Rica
- Palau
Why choose these places?
New Zealand is world famous for having fantasic eco credentials. They have a government department with responsibility for conservation, one of their projects helped the rare Fjordland Penguin back from the brink of extiction!
Kenya banned single use plastics in 2017. Plastic bags are removed from passengers at the airports, we have a way to go to catch up with such a great initiative. If you can, try to stay on a conservancy in Kenya. They are run with the local people and they benefit economically from your stay.
Scotland has incredible scenery and has invested in caring for the local wildlife. In recent years the Scottish wildlife Trust has reintroduced the beaver into selected areas, and they seem to be thriving.
Costa Rica has pristine rainforest as well as great beaches, and of course it is home to the Sloth! There are so many different species of birds and animals to see from your eco destination, some accommodation is run by locals.
Palau is an island nation in the western Pacific Ocean, it is the first country in the world to make visitors sign a pledge in their passport on entry. The pledge is where you promise to preserve and protect the island and to leave nothing but footprints!
